Dating from the last quarter of the Victorian era this empty tin contained the middle, and upper class essential knife cleaning powder for use with a leather knife board, or cleaning machine. It was manufactured by John Oakey & Sons at their London Wellington Emery & Black Lead Mills and features the Duke of Wellington supported by two rampant lions. It was sold in canisters at 1d, 2d,, 3d, 6d, 1/-, 2/6 & 4/- (old real money!) each. The removable tin lid has perforations for sprinkling the powder, but the lid label remains intact on this example. The colours are still vibrant and the directions for use quite clear.
